Understanding Hybrid Mode and Stop Conditions
What Is Hybrid Mode?
Hybrid Mode is a powerful feature available on the Elite plan that combines AI automation with human expertise. Instead of having the AI handle entire conversations from start to finish, Hybrid Mode lets the AI manage initial interactions and then seamlessly hand off to your human chatters once specific conditions are met.
This gives you the best of both worlds: AI handles the high-volume, repetitive early stages of conversations while your team takes over for high-value interactions where a personal touch makes the biggest difference.
How Hybrid Mode Works
When Hybrid Mode is enabled for a creator, the AI operates normally through the conversation phases (discovery, pre-sexualisation, sexting, PPV delivery) until a stop condition is triggered. Once the condition is met, the AI stops responding to that fan's messages and your team takes over.
Here is the typical flow:
- A fan sends a message to your creator.
- The AI responds automatically, progressing through conversation phases.
- The AI sends PPVs, handles negotiations, and builds the relationship.
- When the stop condition is triggered (e.g., the fan has spent a certain amount), the AI stops.
- The conversation appears in your team's queue, and a human chatter picks it up.
- Your team continues the conversation with full context from the AI's history.
Setting Up Stop Conditions
Stop conditions are required for Hybrid Mode to work. You must configure at least one stop condition before enabling Hybrid Mode for a creator. Without a stop condition, the AI would never know when to hand off the conversation.
You can configure stop conditions in your creator's AI settings.
Fan Spend Limit
This condition triggers the handoff when a fan's total spend on the creator exceeds a threshold you set.
- Minimum value: $20
- How it works: The AI tracks total revenue from each fan (messages, tips, PPV purchases). Once the fan's cumulative spend crosses your threshold, the AI stops managing that conversation.
- Best for: Agencies that want the AI to handle lower-value interactions while humans focus on high-spending fans.
Example: You set the spend limit to $50. A fan subscribes and the AI handles the conversation. The fan purchases a $30 PPV, then a $25 PPV. After the second purchase, their total spend ($55) exceeds $50, triggering the handoff.
Subscription Duration
This condition triggers the handoff based on how long the fan has been subscribed to the creator.
- Minimum value: 3 days
- Available units: Days, Months, or Years
- How it works: The AI checks how long the fan has held an active subscription. Once the subscription duration exceeds your threshold, the handoff occurs.
- Best for: Agencies that want the AI to manage new fans during the initial engagement period, then transition to humans for long-term relationship building.
Example: You set the duration to 7 days. A new fan subscribes and the AI handles all conversations for the first week. On day 8, the AI hands off to your team.
Combining Stop Conditions with AND/OR
You can use multiple stop conditions together and control how they interact using the AND/OR operator.
AND Operator (Default)
When set to AND, all conditions must be met before the handoff triggers. This is the more conservative option — the AI keeps managing the conversation until every condition is satisfied.
Example: Spend Limit = $50 AND Subscription Duration = 7 days. The AI only hands off when the fan has spent more than $50 AND has been subscribed for more than 7 days. If the fan spends $100 in the first 3 days, the AI still keeps going because the duration condition has not been met.
OR Operator
When set to OR, the handoff triggers as soon as any single condition is met. This is the more aggressive option — the AI hands off at the earliest opportunity.
Example: Spend Limit = $50 OR Subscription Duration = 7 days. If the fan spends $55 on day 2, the handoff happens immediately (spend condition met). Alternatively, if the fan only spends $10 but reaches day 8, the handoff also triggers (duration condition met).
Script Requirements in Hybrid Mode
Scripts work slightly differently in Hybrid Mode compared to Full AI Mode:
- Hybrid Mode: Scripts require a minimum total price of $20 across all templates in the script.
- Full AI Mode: Scripts require a minimum total price of $45 across all templates.
The lower threshold in Hybrid Mode reflects that the AI typically handles a shorter portion of the conversation before handing off, so it needs less content to work with.
Commission in Hybrid Mode
Hybrid Mode has a different commission structure compared to Full AI Mode:
- Full AI Mode: Substy charges commission on all revenue generated within a 15-minute window after the AI sends a message. This includes purchases the fan makes shortly after an AI message, even if a human was also involved.
- Hybrid Mode: Substy only charges commission on revenue directly attributed to AI-sent messages. There is no 15-minute attribution window. If your human chatter closes a sale, that revenue is commission-free.
This makes Hybrid Mode especially cost-effective for agencies with strong human chatters who can convert high-value fans after the AI has done the initial engagement work.
Practical Tips for Setting Up Hybrid Mode
Start with Conservative Thresholds
If you are new to Hybrid Mode, start with higher spend limits and longer duration thresholds. This lets the AI handle more of the conversation so you can evaluate its performance before increasing human involvement.
Use AND for High-Value Optimization
The AND operator ensures the AI only hands off fans who have both demonstrated spending willingness and ongoing engagement. This prevents handing off fans who made a quick purchase but may not be long-term subscribers.
Use OR for Faster Human Engagement
If your team excels at converting fans, use the OR operator with moderate thresholds to get conversations into human hands sooner. This is ideal for agencies with experienced chatters who can build stronger relationships.
Monitor the Transition
After enabling Hybrid Mode, closely watch how fans respond to the handoff. Look for any drop in engagement or spending after the transition from AI to human. If you notice a dip, your team may need additional training on maintaining the conversation tone the AI established.
Adjust Over Time
There is no one-size-fits-all configuration. Review your stop condition thresholds regularly and adjust based on your data. If the AI is doing a great job and most of the revenue comes from the AI-managed phase, consider raising the thresholds. If humans consistently outperform the AI after handoff, consider lowering them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enable Hybrid Mode for some creators and Full AI for others?
Yes. Hybrid Mode is configured per creator. You can run some creators on Full AI Mode and others on Hybrid Mode depending on your strategy.
What happens to ongoing conversations when I switch to Hybrid Mode?
Existing conversations will begin following the stop conditions on their next interaction. The AI will check the conditions before responding and hand off if the thresholds have already been met.
Do I need the Elite plan for Hybrid Mode?
Yes. Hybrid Mode is exclusively available on the Elite plan. Full AI Mode is available on all plans that include AI chatting.
